Sherborne Has Bloomed
Well, the exhibition's over and from the feedback we've received from all the many visitors we can be sure that it was a great success.
Here's a letter we received from Anne Morse:

Anne is a well-known artist in her own right and praise from her is praise indeed. And thanks are due to her for her assistance in getting use of the screens to stage our exhibition.
Winner of the visitors' vote for favourite photograph was Keith for his picture of the garden at Wisteria House, Long Street. Well done, Keith.
We photographers have now done our stint (phew!) and we can now relax for the summer. That is, if it ever stops raining ...
Thanks gang.

Sherborne In Bloom Judging Day
Hi gang,
Today has been the big day and as I write it has gone so well.
We met the two Britain in Bloom judges this morning at the Castle Orangery and they were suitably impressed. (Not every town has its own castle so if you've got it, flaunt it !)

We talked them through the portfolio and that seemed to go down well.
The Britain in Bloom judges are the two in the middle with the blue clipboards:

Thanks to Keith who was the papparazo.
Then Caz and co. took them on a tour of the town to see all the bits we want them to see. It started off raining but brightened up and by the end the sun was shining so all looked good.
After that they came back to see the exhibition and they were genuinely staggered by the number and quality of the photos. Thanks to everyone for making this possible: we can be proud that we have shown the best of Sherborne's gardens to the people who count. After prize-giving of the gardens competition by the mayor, followed by a lunch at the Boys School, the judges left.
A lot of people came through the exhibition today and we are expecting it to be busy. The exhibition is now on till Saturday so please come and help steward whenever you can.
Congratulations to Brian H., Keith and Norman for prizes in the photography competition.
Thanks everyone, we've done fine.

Cheap Street In Bloom
At last Cheap Street is starting to bloom!
Most of the shops have hanging baskets and some also have window boxes. Photographing the baskets can be difficult because they sometimes don't show up well enough against the contrast of the buildings, but get the right angle and the picture can be composed to show the spirit of Sherborne In Bloom.
I went shopping this morning and took these happy snappies:

These photos show that the shopkeepers are making the effort and this is what we want to capture.

The Half Moon is now returning to last year's glory. Can someone go and get a shot on a nice day with people sitting outside drinking beer? Today was raining so no custom!

Even the banks are anxious to show how well they spend their customers' money...
See you next Tuesday, usual time, usual place.

Sherborne In Bloom Timetable
Hi gang,
We have now been informed that the judges will be visiting Sherborne on 17 July, which enables us (at last!) to plan our schedule.
So, here's the outline timetable for our Sherborne In Bloom project:
| Date |
Event |
| Fri 29 June |
Mounts available from Sherborne Photographic |
| Thu 12 July |
Each photographer to have completed 30 mounted prints ready for exhibition |
| Sun 15 July |
Erection of screens and start of staging exhibition |
| Tue 17 July |
Sherborne In Bloom judging and exhibition opens |
| Sat 21 July |
Exhibition to close 2:00pm. |
There are some details to be filled in which we can discuss when we meet. In particular, this timetable clashes with the Somerton Arts Festival where many of us will be exhibiting our photos, so we will need to arrange some smart footwork to make sure that we can cover both events simultaneously
In the meantime, please keep me informed of your progress. As agreed, everyone has to produce 30 mounted prints (which you decide for yourself) so please tell me when you have completed your quota. More important, please give me early warning if you are not able to produce your 30 and I can get someone else to go round your area and make up the number.
I don't actually need to see all your photos, but if you want to send me any to put on this blog I will be happy to do so.
Next meeting: Thursday 21 June, 10:30am Cheap Street Church Hall (next to former Methodist church)
See ya!

Private Gardens
Private Paradise
It's amazing what's there round the back of house! Here's one of Ted's shots of an entry by an obviously bird-loving gardener:

Great shot, Ted.
A reminder to all photographers
Don't forget to keep a record of the address of the garden you photograph. When you mount your photos ready for the exhibition I will provide a sticky label to go on the back so that we can catalogue all entries and the judges will know who has won prizes. I'll ask you for a list of the photos you will be exhibiting in the week before the exhibition.
We still don't know exact dates but we are assuming week beginning 15 July.
Keep 'em coming - and email me what you'd like me to show on this blog.

More Blooms
Hi gang,
Norman and Ted have been busy and the photos are flowing in! Norman's are the first to be processed from film.
Sherborne Photographic have developed the films and scanned the images on to disc, from where I have saved a few to go into our Image Gallery. Norman can now browse his photos on CD and choose what he wants to print.
Here's one example of Norman's work:

To see more, look over to the right under 'Menu' and click on 'My Image Gallery'. This will show the opening image. Click on that and you'll see a slide show.
Just to remind you, we have been told by Caz that she doesn't want us to photograph the 'adopt-a-plot-' sites or any municipal properties. She may include one or two in her portfolio but she is going to tell us specifically what she wants for that. We just have to concentrate on private houses and businesses.
We are meeting again on Tuesday evening 26 June at 7:45pm for 8:00pm, Bradfor Abbas Village Hall.
As yet, we still don't know when the judging date is.
That's it for today. Keep in touch,

It's all happening now - the town is coming into bloom - at last...
Here's one of Keith's images that I like:

To see more pictures, look under 'Menu' on the left and click on 'My Image Gallery'. Click on a thumbnail and it will display a slide show for you!
If you have some images that you would like to include in the blog, please email them to me.
See you tonight!

Adopt A Plot
As well as all the gardens in the town we also have to photgraph the 'adopt a plot' sites. Most of these have now been adopted by willing gardeners, so there should soon be worthwhile subjects for photography.
Please could everyone please make sure that they check these as they go aound their patches:
- Culverhayes Car Park flower bed
- Kitt Hill seating area
- Digby Road bus shelter area
- A30 Coldharbour roundabout
- Top of town roundabout
- Railway station tubs and gardens
- Planters in Cheap Street (and anywhere else)
- Yeatman Hospital car park
- Newland car park fence
- Bristol Road corner with Gryphon School
- Bristol Road grass verge
- Long Street planter
- Castle Road opposite Castleton View
- Digby Road Masonic Hall
- Floral Banner Coldharbour
- Floral Banner Horsecastles Lane
- Pageant Gards Flower Beds
Next meeting next Tuesday 7:45pm for 8:00pm Bradford Abbas Village Hall - 1 hour
The hanging baskets and window boxes are now appearing all over town. Happy snapping!

Here Comes Summer
The sun's been shining, the blooms are blooming and the entries are plopping in to Keith for the gardens competition.
So, we're on our way! If you haven't yet started, what's stopping you?
If you have started, have you any images that we can post to this blog? I thought it might be a nice idea to show some examples of work in progress so that the world can see Sherborne in bloom.
If you can, please email me any images you would like to see displayed and I will showcase them here.
And don't forget, we are meeting Wednesday (6 June) evening, 7:45pm for 8:00pm, at Bradford Abbas Village Hall. There's a lot to report, so don't miss it.
Let's go!

Carving Up The Town (update 1)
Hi everyone,
Keith and I had a very useful meeting with Caz of Sherborne Area Partnership this afternoon. Items of immediate action are:
Film Photographers
Arrangements have been made for Sherborne Photographic (1 Cheap Street) to supply film for Sherborne in Bloom. The film is already paid for and you can go in and collect what you need on presentation of your official badge.
All Photographers
We are planning to use standard 10" x 12" mounts with 8" x 10" aperture for all the photos. These mounts will be supplied. Final details about availability of mounts are yet to be agreed, but you can use these dimensions when thinking about/preparing your photos.
Dates
Judging is expected to take place on Tuesday 17 July, although we won't get confirmation of that until after 7 June. We are hoping to stage our exhibition in the Methodist Hall during that week.
The task for everyone is to produce 300 photographs (30 each!) before that date.
Sherborne Bradford Abbas Camera Club next meeting
7:45pm for 8:00pm Bradford Abbas Village Hall Wednesday 6 June. We will have maps available at the meeting and Keith will update us on progress on all matters outstanding.

Carving Up The Town
Hi gang,
At our meeting on Tuesday we decided that we would carve up the town between us to make sure that no bloom in Sherborne goes unsnapped!
We made some decisions about who would do what, but there are some gaps to be filled.
Could you please study the map and table below and let me know what (more) areas you could undertake to cover. The grid references are taken from the map that Alec distributed. The squares indicate only some of the major landmarks and are not a definitive taxonomy.
| A1 |
B1 |
C1
Quarr Lane Caravan Park
Gryphon School
Bristol Road |
D1 |
| A2 |
B2
Sheeplands Lane
Barton Gardens
Girl's School |

Here are the task allocations so far:

| Brian C |

What we want to do is to make sure that every square of the map is covered. This will involve undertaking to walk all the streets in a square, noting what there is (or isn't) and taking pictures when the blooms are at their best. Some squares can be walked by one person: others are denser and will need two or more.
So, in the first instance could you please let me know which streets you are prepared to walk and snap. If you could give me a list of the streets I will mark up a master (paper) map and we will distribute these to let everyone know who is doing what. And when I've heard from you I'll be able to isolate any areas where we don't have coverage so that gaps can be plugged.
Please email me with your offers and please let me know if you have already done any photography.
I'll then get a detailed schedule going and post it up here so that everyone can see how we're doing.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Sherborne Bradford Abbas Camera Club
Message from Gillian:
Hi gang. Here's our blog which we will use to monitor the progress of our work on the Sherborne In Bloom competition.
There are already some impressive flowers appearing around the town and it's our job to capture these for posterity while they're at their finest.
As the season progresses (and the weather improves!) we'll be seeing the hanging baskets coming out and containers appearing and the whole town bursting into blooooom !
Each of us has a 'territory' to shoot and it will be important to monitor our progress in this time-sensitive venture.
Check back soon for more details about how we can use this blog.
Happy snapping,
g.

Sherborne In Bloom Growing For Gold Competition
About This Blog
Sherborne Bradford Abbas Camera Club are supporting 'Sherborne In Bloom 2007', our town's entry in this year's prestigous Britain In Bloom competition.
Members of the club will be roaming the town taking photographs of the gardens, containers, shops, pubs, restaurants, allotments, open spaces, private spaces - in fact, anywhere where they can find spectacular blooms!
The photographic entries will be displayed in the town in judging week (mid July).
This blog is primarily for the photographers to keep in touch with one another and to monitor progress as we shoot the town's flowers!
